A WESTCLIFF soldier is serving in Iraq helping to make sure the Army's vehicles are in fighting condition.

Christopher Littlejohns, 22, is using his skills on a six-month tour of duty for the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.

The former Cecil Jones pupil's job is to maintain the 4 Rifle Battle Group's armoured vehicle fleet so they can carry out operations in Basra.

He is based in Basra Palace, one of Saddam Hussein's former homes, which is on the banks of Shatt al Arab River and is currently being used as a British camp.

From here he regularly goes out on patrols and strike operations in a Warrior recovery vehicle to provide forces with the support they need.

He said: "It's really challenging and frightening at times, but you can't help getting a little bit excited too. I know why we are here, but when it matters, you are only fighting for the bloke next door to you and you know they are doing the same for you."

Mr Littlejohns will return home in November at the end of his tour.
