A FED-UP resident is calling for extra yellow lines to be installed along a busy cutthrough road to stop drivers parking along the roadside and causing crashes.

James Cowlard, 66, of Thorney Bay Road, was forced to clean up shattered glass from the road on Tuesday after a car and van collided right outside his home - the latest in a spate of collisions at the same spot.

The grandfather-of-five said: "I think there should be no parking along this stretch of the road. It's extremely dangerous.

"Cars go round the bend and suddenly stop when they see a parked car. They grind to a halt and then another vehicle crashes into the back of them.

"We already have double yellow lines up by Thames Road, but I think they should be introduced further down here."

Mr Cowlard added how the rows of parked vehicles were reducing visibility for drivers along the bends, and believes increased parking restrictions might make the road safer.

He said: "It's definitely getting busier as they are building more homes along here.

"Years ago it used to be an open space, but now more and more cars are using it. It's an accident waiting to happen." Ray Howard, chairman of the environment committee, said he had mixed feelings over introducing more parking restrictions along Thorney Bay Road, and stressed it was something that required further investigation.

"When you have a clear road, cars do tend to go faster. By having cars parked there it reduces the speed of vehicles," he said.

However, he agreed Thorney Bay Road does have a serious speeding problem.

"We have requested two flashing 30mph speed signs which are due to be installed any day now," he said.

"I am also due to have a meeting on the island later today to discuss problem areas for speeding."
