A CHARITY go-karting event ended in tragedy when the husband of former Thurrock mayor Joy Redsell died of a heart attack.

Ray Redsell, 61, had been taking part in property developer Great Homes's annual fundraiser at Lakeside Karting Raceway, in West Thurrock.

The event raises money for charities across the borough, including Thurrock Community Chest, of which Mrs Redsell is a trustee.

Mr Redsell had just finished some fundraising laps when he suffered a heart attack and died.

David Sparks, managing director of Great Homes, paid tribute to his kind nature and love for his family.

He said: "We would like to offer our sympathy and condolences to Joy Redsell and her family.

"Once again, we were raising money for Thurrock Community Chest. Ray, Joy and their daughter Mandy were with us to offer their support.

"We had met Ray on numerous occasions over the past year and it was obvious to all of his kind nature, and love for his family. All of us at Great Homes are deeply saddened and shocked.

"Our thoughts are with Joy and her family."

Mrs Redsell, who lived with her husband in Grays, was last year's mayor, and was too upset to comment.

Thurrock Council leader Terry Hipsey said: "It's a great tragedy.

"Our sympathies are with Joy and her family. Ray did great work as her consort and contributed to a marvellous year for the borough.

"He will be deeply and sorely missed by all who knew him."
