WORRIED residents want assurances about the development planned for an allotment at Warners Bridge, Southend.

Ted Lewin, Lib Dem councillor for St Lawrence, said locals have been repeatedly told this is going to be a waste transfer station.

However at council meetings, it is still referred to as being either a waste transfer station or cleansing depot.

He said: "What I am seeking is a definite assurance it will be a waste transfer station and not anything else."

Ian Robertson, councillor responsible for waste, said it was impossible to give this assurance at the present time.

He added this was dependent on the final conclusions of the waste management strategy which was being worked out in conjunction with Essex County Council.

He said: "The most I can say is that a waste transfer station is the proposal at this moment.

"It is the most likely scenario, but I cannot give an absolute guarantee."

Other members were concerned other sites had not been looked at closely, including the Prittlebrook Industrial Estate, originally the Ekco works.
