SOUTHEND councillors are being asked to approve changes at the Palace Theatre in Westcliff, which have already taken place.

A report to the development control committee by head of planning Steve Kearney said the work had been carried out by HQ Theatres, which runs the theatre on behalf of the council.

He said the company stated previous arrangements in the foyer and other parts of the theatre caused health and safety difficulties and other problems, which would have affected bookings.

As the building is owned by the council, a final decision will be made by the Secretary of State.

The changes have seen an enlargement of the ladies' toilets, which have been moved, with the men's toilets being repositioned where the ladies' previously were.

The box office had been moved to a position next to the central staircase, previously the refreshment booth, which had been moved into the former box office.

Other improvements included changes to the back of the building incorporating a ramped fire exit and new offices.

First-floor ladies' toilets are to be refurbished. Mr Kearney said: "It is not considered the changes made have compromised the interests of the building.

"The changes have improved the longevity of the theatre in terms of health and safety and fire regulations and have improved it, ensuring the future of the theatre."
