The work and achievements of some of Thurrock's finest citizens were celebrated at the Thurrock Civic Awards at Blackshots Civic Hall.

More than 400 guests heard of the remarkable achievements, years of dedication and selflessness from the nominees.

The winners were: Young Citizen of the Year: Nicholas Greatrex for his charity work and as a model citizen at Chafford Hundred Business and Enterprise College. Deputy Headteacher, Clare Suttling said: "Nicholas was a great ambassador for the school."

Citizen of the Year: Jo and John Franks for their work over thirty years providing the Talking Newspaper for Thurrock.

Sports and Culture: Victoria Jarmyn-Purvis for the development of JTD School of Performing Arts.

Lifetime Achievement: Rudy Weeber for a lifetime of sponsored charity work for the British Heart Foundation, Mencap and Marie Curie including cycling to Poland, Holland and China.

Mayors Award: Hans Neumann, a Holocaust survivor arrived in England with no relatives and forged a new life.
