A THREE-CAR crash on the A127 caused rush-hour gridlock after police were forced to close a mile-long stretch of the entire road for almost two hours.

The accident, in which a woman suffered suspected back injuries, happened on the London-bound carriageway just after the A130 turn-off.

Tailbacks were reported to have gone all the way back to Rayleigh Spur.

The woman, thought to be in her twenties, was cut out of her wrecked blue Vauxhall Tigra by firefighters, who had to remove the vehicle's roof.

She was placed on a spinal support board and taken by ambulance to hospital with a suspected back injury.

Hadleigh Fire Station's leading firefighter Phil Owens said the crash appeared to have been the result of a shunt on the outside lane, with the Tigra caught between a red Citroen C5 in front and a green Vauxhall Astra behind.

Mr Owens said the woman's injuries did not appear to be too serious.

Two fire crews from Hadleigh attended, alongside crews from Leigh and Rayleigh, and spent about 40 minutes at the scene.

The crash happened at about 6pm today (Wednesday).
