FINAL permission has been granted for the construction of the world's largest wind farm off Essex The London Array wind farm, which will consist of 341 turbines, will be built 12 miles off the Essex and Kent coast between Clacton and Margate.

The Government, which gave consent for the scheme last December, has announced electricity transmission works associated with the project can also go ahead.

The project will provide up to 1,000 megawatts of energy and will avoid emissions of up to 1.9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.

The plans have been opposed by both the Chamber of Shipping and Kent and Essex Sea Fisheries, who fear it will affect both the environment and navigation.

Construction of the substation is expected to start next year and work on the first phase of the wind farm is expected to begin in 2009.
