A BUS firm has threatened to pull its services off Canvey after thugs launched rocks at two moving vehicles.

Bosses at First, which operates the buses on the island, have warned services may be suspended following yet more “mindless” attacks on buses and drivers in the area.

On one evening last week, a driver had to pull over while the bus was in service after yobs threw a rock at the top floor of the double decker bus, smashing one of the windows.

MP Rebeeca Harris expressed her disgust at the incidents and urged parents to keep on their children.

She said: “This is absolutely disgraceful behaviour, which could cause serious injury and I have raised this with the police.

“These children should not be out in groups due to Coronavirus. I would hope parents will more vigilant on what their children are up to.”

Bosses confirmed no one was injured in the attacks.

Dan Worley, operations manager at First, in Hadleigh, added: “It is a very concerning situation and one that we are taking very seriously.

“The safety of our staff and customers will always be at the forefront of any decisions we make regarding the service we provide. If incidents continue to occur, we may need to suspend buses operating to the area at any point in the day or evening to safeguard people travelling.

“The situation has been ongoing intermittently now for over 12 months and we need to find a resolution.”

Norman Smith, leader of Castle Point council, said: “I would understand if they did suspend services. There’s no point persuading them to stay when it’s unsafe for drivers.

“I can’t see any other bus companies wanting to replace them with what’s going on.”
