A teenager is set to swim close to 70km over the course of a week in a bid to raise funds for a cause close to his heart.

Sam Miller, a Westcliff High School for Boys Sixth Form student, has set his sights on swimming the equivalent distance of the English Channel twice in just one week.

The 18-year-old is looking to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK, with his grandad suffering with the disease and his nan also living with dementia.

A keen swimmer before the coronavirus pandemic forced pools to shut their doors, Sam is hoping to take the plunge when government restrictions are lifted.

He said: “With my grandad having Alzheimer’s and my nan dealing with dementia, I want to do all I can to help other families dealing with similar situations.

“I loved swimming before the pandemic and so I thought heading to the pool would be a great way to raise money.

“My challenge involves swimming the equivalent distance of the English Channel twice in just one week, or 2,704 lengths in a 25m pool.

“I will have to swim close to 10km for seven consecutive days and it’s considered to be the same difficulty as running a marathon, but I’m confident I’ll complete my goal.”

Sam, of Leigh, is yet to decide where the fundraiser will take place, but he has already raised more than £1,300 ahead of the scheduled fundraiser in May.

He added: “My nan and grandad don’t really understand what I’m looking to do, but my parents are proud.

“My family and friends have already donated so much and I’ve smashed my target of £500 already.”
