A TRAUMATISED nan “could have been killed” by two teenage yobs who fired rocks at moving cars from a bridge.

A woman’s car roof was hit by a rock on the Broadmayne, by two youngsters standing on top of the bridge over the busy road.

The boys were spotted sprinting from the scene when the victim, aged in her 60s, and two other drivers pulled over.

Witnesses say the woman was “badly traumatised.”

Kerry Smith, deputy leader of the council, has urged headteachers across Basildon, police officers, and ambulance crews to hold emergency school assemblies in a bid to solve the problem.

He said: “She could have been killed.

“What they don’t understand is that this could have been fatal, it’s a moving vehicle.

“There needs to be a clamp down on this from all parties.

“There’s a nationwide issue with young people firing rocks at birds and cars, it’s happening here too now.

“Police and ambulance crews need to go into schools and properly educate students on how this can’t keep happening.”

The boys, believed to be aged around 13 to 14, were seen holding rocks from the bridge.

The speed limit along the Broadmayne is 30mph.

Jo Timson, 54, who was driving behind the victim at the time of the incident, added: “They were deliberately aiming at the cars.

“Surely they’re old enough to realise the danger of their moronic actions?

“Mercifully it missed the lady’s windscreen and instead hit the roof of the car.

“They were in school uniform.

“Another member of the public stopped his car too and gave chase but I believe they were too fast for him and they shot off into the Fryerns estate.

“She was absolutely traumatised bless her.”

The woman driving pulled over immediately after the incident yesterday afternoon.

Yobs armed with catapult have plagued Wickford in recent months, with wildlife and homes hit with rocks.

Several cars were also targeted in the spate of incidents since last summer.

A goose was even swung by the neck and left to die in the Wick Country Park earlier this year by a group of yobs.

Essex Police were also contacted for comment.
