A GROUP of Southend Hospital staff who work behind closed doors have been honoured by chief executive John Gilham.

The theatre practitioners were given a high achievement award. When patients come into contact with these staff, they are anaesthetised and know little of what goes on in their care.

However, they greatly appreciate the lively chats and other ploys used to relieve anxiety.

Pat Allen, theatres training co-ordinator, who nominated the department for an award, said: "I want the world to know about the skill, dedication and professionalism of all those who deliver this level of care day after day behind closed doors."

Other achievers included the wound management team set up last year. Members give prompt advice and support on all aspects of the subject from using the right type of equipment to psychological support for amputees.

Among the individuals singled out were ward manager Andrea Turner, honoured for introducing volunteers, named Feeding Buddies, to help patients with their food and fluid intake.

Occupational therapist Beverly Loughborough received her award for developing a self-care assessment form where patients can list all the issues and problems which concern them.

Healthcare assistant Elaine Tubb was recognised for raising funds by making cards to sell in her own time.

Altogether seven departments, 12 teams and 23 individuals received formal recognition in the awards.

Mr Gilham said: "It confirms that staff in all areas of the hospital are truly dedicated and enthusiastic about their work.

They consistently go way beyond their job descriptions to ensure patients receive the very best treatment and care."
