BASILDON police are questioning a teenager following a crash on the M11 which killed a young boy.

The crash happened at 8am on Saturday when the driver of a blue Vauxhall Signum appears to have lost control and slid down an embankment of the south-bound carriage-way, near Harlow.

A 16-year-old boy from south London was found in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

A 17-year-old boy from Shepherds Bush, in west London, was found in nearby undergrowth and airlifted to Romford's Queens Hospital. He was in a stable condition but suffered serious arm injuries.

A third man was seen running away from the scene covered in blood.

Police checks revealed a car of the same description had been stolen from Twickenham, in south-west London, on Friday.

A 16-year-old boy from Shepherd's Bush, in west London, was arrested at his home on Saturday afternoon.

Road traffic officers from Basildon questioned him on suspicion of a number of offences.

The 17-year-old was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and will be taken to a Police station on his release from hospital.

The south-bound carriage-way of the M11 was closed and re-opened at 7pm on Saturday. Congestion also affected the north-bound carriageway as motorists slowed down to view the accident.
