HUNDREDS of residents have made it clear they want radical change in Grays.

The Thames Gateway Development Corporation sent out more than 7,000 questionnaires, asking residents about their views on the town's masterplan.

Four hundred responses were returned along with a 250-strong petition to save Grays beach and opposing Marina plans.

Yet the majority of residents are eager for change.

Plans for a university campus and a community hospital were well received.

The response to the creation of new piazza-style areas was largely positive, countered by concern at the loss of some play areas, such as Kilverts Field.

Responses were largely positive towards the marina, but the petition clearly stated the feeling among those living nearby the beach.

The membership of Thurrock Yacht Club was mixed. Some members were opposed to the principle, but others recognised the potential and opportunity a new marina would bring.

The introduction of riverside bars and restaurants were also welcomed by the vast majority along with proposals for a southern high street.

Many wanted to improve the railway station and surrounding area.

However, 40 per cent opposed or strongly opposed more town centre housing. Many had concerns about increased traffic.

Members of the Development Corporation's planning committee will look at the findings on Monday, April 14.
