A MAN has told of the terrifying moment his throat was cut in an unprovoked attack.

The 36-year-old, who asked not to be named, needed 30 stitches to the wound, which stretched the length of his throat.

The man, from Fobbing, was walking his dog along Bells Hill Road, Vange, when he was approached from behind, hit in the face and felt a sharp pain in his neck.

It was only when he got home he realised his injuries were serious.

The man said: "I felt a weird sensation.

"I took a couple of steps back and saw the man running away.

"When I got home I saw the blood gushing from my neck."

The man is now scarred for life and said the attack and injury have knocked his confidence.

He added: "It does my head in when people look at the scar and I don't like being asked about it."

Detectives investigating the slashing are appealing for witnesses.

Det Con Matthew Schneider, of Basildon CID, said: "This was a horrific and completely unprovoked attack.

"This man took his dog for a walk and ended up nearly losing his life. Somebody must know who this attacker was and I would urge them to do the right thing and contact me."

The knifeman was 5ft 11ins tall and wore a black jacket and blue jeans.

Witnesses to the attack, which happened between 6pm and 6.30pm on Tuesday, March 11, can contact Det Con Schneider at Basildon CID on 01268 244009.
