A 12-year-old cyclist was seriously injured last night when he was in collision with a car in Canvey Road, Canvey.
The boy, from Canvey, was taken to Basildon Hospital with serious injuries following the accident which happened at 7.20pm. His parents are at his bedside.
The driver of a blue sports car did not stop at the scene and was later arrested for failing to stop and report the accident.
A 24-year-old Canvey man was questioned at Southend Police Station and later released on police bail until June 24.
Police, who closed the road until 1am, are appealing for witnesses to the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Mark Wade at Rayleigh road policing unit on 0300 3334444.
