THE body of a “hugely popular” school cook was found in a freezer at the primary school where she worked.

Linda Gent, 55, of Linden Leas, Benfleet, was discovered by police following a search of South Benfleet Primary School.

A post mortem revealed the likely cause of death to be hypothermia, but further tests are still being carried out.

Her death is not being treated as suspicious.

The school’s headteacher, Dominic Carver, said: “Everyone connected with South Benfleet Primary School has been devastated by the sudden death of Linda Gent, our school cook. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time.

“Mrs Gent was a hugely popular and highly valued member of our catering team.

“Her positive contribution of about 20 years at the school has been magnificent.”

Mrs Gent’s body was found following a widespread police search of the school on Saturday, September 27, after a member of public rang officers at 2.30am to say they were concerned for her welfare.

Pupils and staff were told of the discovery when they arrived at the school in High Road on Monday, September 29.

Bill Stock, of Essex Police, said: “Police were contacted at 2.30am on Saturday, September 27, by a member of the public who was concerned for the welfare of Linda Gent.

“A search of the school was carried out and shortly after 6pm a woman’s body was found on the premises. A post mortem examination failed to reveal an exact cause of death and further tests are being carried out.”

An inquest has been opened and adjourned while further tests are carried out.
