COMMUTERS have praised c2c rail, backing a survey in which passengers have ranked the firm one of the best in the UK.

Figures released from the National Passenger Survey show 90 per cent of commuters using the Shoebury to London Fenchurch Street line are satisfied with the service they get.

The company was ranked joint top, alongside Chiltern Railways, FirstScotRail and Merseyrail in the survey.

Julian Drury, c2c’s managing director, said: “Everyone has been working hard to enhance the service we offer and we are pleased to have seen improvements in key areas of the survey.

“The survey also enables us to focus on areas of the business where we can bring about further improvements.”

Peter Slattery, spokesman for Southend Rail Travellers’ Association, said the survey result reflected the view of most travellers. He said: “Generally, the frontline staff on this line are very helpful and courteous to everyone.

“People on the gates help as much as they can and often go out of their way.

“Dissatisfaction comes from fare increases which have come in since this survey was done, but the staff themselves deserve to be praised.”

Commuter Mark Quaid, 28, of Hillway, Westcliff said: “I know people moan about travelling into London, but I think c2c does offer a great service.

“Trains are on time, reliable and the staff know what they are talking about.

“They are helpful and do try to keep the train passenger in mind.

“The only gripe I can think of is c2c needs to improve its communication when things go wrong.

“People can be standing on platforms for ages when trains are cancelled and have no idea why.”

Sue Allanson, 24, of Genesta Road, Westcliff, added: “When you compare c2c to other rail companies, you do get a good service.

“But I still think the cost of rail travel to London is way too high.”
