FIREFIGHTERS carried out a fire safety check at the home of Tory MP James Duddridge.

Mr Duddridge, MP for Rochford and Southend East, requested the visit after four people in the area were killed by fires in December.

He said: “The deaths brought home to me how important it is to have working smoke alarms in your home.

“Essex Fire and Rescue Service carries out free home fire safety checks and I thought this would be the perfect time to ensure my home was as safe as possible.

“This is a fantastic service. By calling in the professionals, people can make sure their families are as safe as possible.”

Community safety officer John Tidbury said: “A smoke alarm is the most important piece of equipment in any home.

“Not having a working smoke alarm is a risk not worth taking.

“They have been saving lives for 40 years and are no less important now than they were when they were first invented in 1969.”
