POLICE have charged a man and a woman following a cannabis raid in Southend.

Long Nguyen 46 of no fixed address and Huong Pham, 41, both of no fixed address are charged with one count of being concerned in the production of a controlled class B drug and using electricity without authority.

They have been remanded in police custody to appear before Southend magistrates on the next available day as the court is closed today because of the bad weather.

The charges follow a raid on a lock-up behind a Chinese takeaway, in Prince Avenue, where 500 cannabis plants were discovered. Police arrested five people on suspected drug and immigration offences.

A 59-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman both from London have been released on police bail pending further enquiries to February 14.

A 24-year-old woman of no fixed address will have no further action taken against her.

The raid happened at 7.15pm on Saturday and police were still carrying plants off the site yesterday.
