POLICE arrested a 12-year-old boy as part of an operation to combat house burglaries in Southend.

Officers made six arrests over the weekend as part of Operation Avenue, which seeks to crack down on a rise in burglaries in the town.

The 12-year-old was arrested on suspicion of burglary and bailed until March 8.

Asbestos engineer Craig Sim, 19, of Meteor Road, Westcliff, was charged with a house burglary and the theft of a car.

Steven Watts, 21, of no fixed address, was charged with theft of a car and criminal damage.

The pair will appear at Southend Magistrates’ Court today as long as the building re-opens following the bad weather.

A 20-year-old man from Canvey was charged with going equipped to burgle and was bailed until February 18.

Police are also investigating him on suspicion of two house burglaries, the theft of a car, theft from a car, and a separate theft.

A 45-year-old man from Westcliff was arrested on suspicion of two house burglaries, theft of a car, and theft from a car. He was also bailed until February 18.

A 20-year-old man from Leigh was arrested on suspicion of house burglary and bailed until February 21.
