p> A STEELWORKER who suffered serious burns in an industrial accident is recovering and in a stable condition in hospital.

Health and safety bosses are investigating after the 40-year-old man was airlifted to hospital after the accident at Industrial Metal Services, on the Vanguard Way Industrial Estate, Shoebury, on Tuesday.

He had 30 per cent burns to his face and upper body.

It is thought a flammable liquid was poured into a burning skip and ignited, setting the man’s clothes alight.

The Health and Safety Executive began an investigation, which has now been passed over to Southend Council.

Southend Council's acting team leader for business regulation, Steve Ramm said: “It will, however, take some time to determine whether the occurrence was due to any breach of the law.”
