THE premature baby at the centre of a police investigation at Great Ormond Street Hospital has died of a suspected glucose overdose.

Poppy Davies sustained severe brain damage after undergoing a minor operation at the top London hospital last month.

Her devastated parents Carly Davies, 22, and David Daly, 21, from Grays, made the heartbreaking decision to switch off their 31-day-old daughter’s life support machine on Sunday at 8.20pm.

Scotland Yard will continue to investigate a possible injury to the three-month premature tot and are awaiting the results of a post mortem.

Great Ormond Street Hospital accepted a glucose overdose is thought to have caused the newborn’s condition to decline.

The inquest into Poppy’s death opens on Thursday at St Pancras Coroner Court, in Camley Street, at 9.30am.

Jo Barber, a spokeswoman for Great Ormond Street Hospital, said: “This is a tragic case, and we extend our deepest condolences to the child’s family at this exceptionally difficult time.

“The trust continues to work with the police to establish the facts surrounding the child’s death and to learn what it can for the future.

“Investigations by the police and the hospital continue.

“We will share any definitive information or findings we have with the family as soon as we are able to.”

A Met Police spokesman said: “An investigation, which was already ongoing, continues by the Child Abuse Investigation Command.

“No arrests have been made.”
