A PROLIFIC charity fundraiser has been presented with a trophy to mark his performance on a Lands End to John O’Groats cycle ride.

Rudy Weeber, 71, took on the gruelling ride last May, while fighting prostate cancer.

He rode the 920 miles in 13 days, raising £3,500 for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Mr Weeber, from Chadwell St Mary, was awarded the Land’s End-John O’Groats Association David Webb Commemorative Trophy for his efforts.

The trophy is presented to the rider who makes the most meritorious journey, taking into account health and disability.

Another keen cyclist, David Webb, known as the Bike Man in Corringham where he lived, also raised thousands of pounds for charity before he lost his battle with cancer in 2007.

Mr Weeber was too ill to travel to Torquay for the formal presentation, so Mr Webb’s wife Carol and son, Chris, gave him the cup at association president Roy Walker’s house in Fobbing.

Mike Johnson, 61, who rode with Mr Weeber on the trip was also given a trophy for helping him. Mr Weeber said of his travelling companion: “He was an inspiration and really helped me on the ride when I didn’t feel well.”
