THE latest victim of the weather is Southend’s Millennium Clock.

Standing at the top of Southend High Street, the clock frequently stops because of the weather.

Now the council is looking for an indoor location which will protect it.

Scott Dolling, Southend Council’s group manager of tourism and promotion, said: “We’re investigating potential indoor locations to help it run more smoothly.

“We are also pursuing a number of possible options for a replacement clock in the High Street as a focal point and also to give residents and visitors a reliable reference point.”

The clock, which was established in December 2000, was based on a design by schoolgirl Nicola Whale.

Passers-by could not agree about what should happen to the clock.

Joanne Stapleton, 44, of Newington Avenue, Southend, said: “An obvious place for it is by the escalators in the Victoria centre.

“But it is a landmark, so perhaps they should protect it from the weather and keep it here.”

But Sarah Back, 26, of Briarwood Drive, Leigh added: “Well, I’m afraid I think it’s really ugly and I don’t think people use it.

“If they don’t leave it here, it should be just got rid of.”
