CATCHING crooks, warning people about crime and weather broadcasts are just some of the things people can watch on Thurrock’s new community TV.

Screens have been put up at ten venues across the borough, including Asda at Tilbury and Ikea at Lakeside.

The 40ins plasma screens will show rolling programmes from Community Information TV.

They will show news, the weather, sports information and carry crime prevention messages with advice on how people can avoid becoming victims of offences like burglary.

The TV is the brainchild of the Thurrock Crime and Safety Disorder Partnership, has been paid for with a £102,000 Home Office grant.

It follows the launch of a similar scheme in Basildon.

Garry Hague, leader of Thurrock Council, said: “This initiative will help us communicate to residents about what we are doing to combat crime and provide practical advice on how individuals can improve their personal safety.”

Ian Martin, regional director of Government Office East, added: “ Our role at the Government office is to help build safer and stronger communities, directly strengthening community engagement.

“Thurrock is a priority partnership and we welcome any projects designed to engage with the community in the fight against crime.”

Chief supt Maurice Mason, divisional commander for Basildon and Thurrock, also welcomed the launch.
