A MUM in a million was given an in-store treat after being crowned a supermarket’s mother of the year.

Brenda Melville, 61 was presented with chocolates and flowers after being whisked off to a surprise reception at Asda’s Eastgate supermarket, in Basildon town centre.

The mum-of-three, who also has two grandchildren, was chosen as the branch’s Wondermum of the Year, after being nominated for the award by her daughter, Emma Hayle, 31.

Emma, of Elderland, Laindon, said, “My mum has had a tough life, but she’s always there for me and for her friends and family.

“She’s like a mum to everyone where she lives. I nominated her because I wanted her to know how appreciated she is by me and by our family.”

Emma wrote a three-page letter to Asda describing how her mum had suffered a series of health problems, but through it all, never lost her caring attitude.

Emma added:” She has muscular and bone problems and can’t walk properly. Sometimes, she can’t even get out of bed, but she refuses to give in and is always upbeat.”

Brenda, of Maplestead, Basildon, broke down in tears when she read Emma’s nomination letter.

She added: “I am so touched to win. It’s amazing.”
