A SPORTS group is backing the controversial plan to build a car park on Shoebury’s East Beach.

Essex Kitesurf Club argues the Southend Council plan for a 175-space car park would make the popular spot safer for people using it.

The council’s facelift plan includes better cycle paths and picnic areas and a car park to stop cars parking on grassland.

It comes after years of residents complaining about youths drinking, playing loud music, having barbecues and driving dangerously on the grass.

Kitesurf club chairman Simon Mudd said the proposal had his group’s support.

He explained: “We have been using the beach for the past seven or eight years at the weekends and during the week.

“This proposal will be safer, as it will keep the cars off of the grass and in one area.

“It will mean children can play without the possibility of being run over.”

Mr Mudd added: “The council has always been very helpful towards us. For once, it wants to spend a lot of money on the area.

“We have to give some of these ideas a go. Otherwise, it would only be a matter of time before there was a fatal accident there.”

Shoebury East Beach Area Action Committee, has voiced opposition to the £350,000 plan because it says it will threaten the environment of the area.

l The council’s plans will be on public display at Shoeburyness High School tonight from 6pm.
