Canvey will get into the Christmas spirit when residents take part in a sponsored fancy dress walk around the island.

Everyone will be dressed in Santa outfits or other Christmas costumes, and follow a sleigh provided by Canvey Rotary Club.

People taking part and spectators will be encouraged to donate wrapped presents, which will be sent to British troops in Afghanistan and across the rest of the world.

Peter May, from Island Boys and Girls Football Club, which is organising the event, said: “It should be a really lovely day. There will be carol singing along the way and a buffet at the end.

“A bus is also being laid on to bring elderly people who might not be able to do the walk, but want to join in.

“People can give the sponsorship money they raise to anyone they want, but the presents will go to the soldiers.”
