YOUNG musicians heard first-hand about the highs and lows of the music industry from a former X Factor hopeful.

Austin Drage dropped in to open day at the Nightfly Studios in Southend to talk to young people considering taking an Access to Music course. The course is designed to help youngsters break into the tough business and is taught by tutors with industry experience.

Austin, 23, who was knocked out in the fourth live round of last year’s show, said: “You might not always reach your full potential or get to the level you want, but if you can make a living out of your music you’re lucky.”

He is currently working on new material with a band and writers who have worked for Lily Allen.

He said of this year’s X Factor: “I don’t think the standard of talent is high this year. It’s turned into a bit of a pantomime with ‘Jedward’.” For course information, visit www.accesstomusic.co.uk
