ASDA is set to build a mezanine-floor to extend its store at the Pipps Hill Retail Park, off Miles Gray Road, Basildon, to sell clothes.

The supermarket has been granted planning permission for an extra 1,290 square metres of sales space to create a new clothing section selling the Asda’s popular George brand, and a restaurant.

Under the plans, the new floor means the shop could expand its lines of toiletries and electrical goods, while current food aisles in the main part of the shop will be widened.

Between 35 to 40 new part-time jobs will be created following the build, which Asda hopes to begin next year.

Pete Knight, one of the managers at the store, said it was fantastic news: “For years the customers have been asking for a George department. It’s good for us and the local community and there will be an increase in the number of jobs.”

Tom McGarry, Asda’s property communications manager, said the proposals had proved popular with customers and work could begin once any final talks with the council were finished.

He said: “We’re delighted the councillors unanimously voted to support the extension.

“We hope to begin the improvements at some point next year.”

Mr McGarry added the store would remain open while any extension works took place.

l SUPERMARKET giant Tesco has put in a new lobby at one of its stores before planning permission has been approved.

The supermarket giant applied to Basildon Council to build a new lobby extension, to act as a wind break, at the main entrance of its store on the Mayflower Retail Park, Basildon.

The council has yet to approve the application.
