SMOKERS looking to quit their habit before Christmas are invited to a support session in Leigh.
NHS South East Essex Stop Smoking Service is hosting a series of events with the first tomorrow.
It will be held at Leigh Primary Care Centre, in London Road, from 10am to 4pm.
Anyone who smokes is welcome to attend and find out more about local NHS stop smoking services.
Although thousands of people in Essex have given up tobacco, there are still an estimated 68,000 smokers in south-east Essex, and there are also relatively high levels of lung cancer in the region.
Techniques for helping smokers to quit include behavioural support and nicotine replacement therapy.
The service helped 2,809 people quit smoking in 2008/09.
Tony Mardle, stop smoking manager at NHS South East Essex, said: “We know people can sometimes find it daunting and confusing when thinking about quitting smoking, but we are here to help you.
“We are your local NHS stop smoking team, and we have been successfully helping people to quit smoking since 2001.
“You are four times more likely to successfully quit smoking if you give up with support from the NHS.
“Don’t be afraid to come along and find out more about how we can help and support you to quit smoking.”
The group plans sessions in the new year. They will be taking place on January 5, at Asda in Shoebury; on January 8 and 9 at the Knightswick Centre, on Canvey; and on January 12 at Boots, in High Street, Rayleigh. All take place between 10am and 4pm.
