TWO community groups are celebrating after they each won a share of a £100,000 grant.

A sustainable arts centre and a community hall were set to go head to head for the cash bonanza, but Essex County Council was forced to abandon the vote after Thundersley residents complained postal ballot papers were not delivered.

The People’s £100k Community Chest has now been split between the two projects – a result both deem to be the fairest result.

Lynn McFarlane, director of sustainable arts centre the Arts Factory, said: “We’re really pleased.

“I think it was the only decision it could make.

“It’s nicer to feel it’s a fair vote. I hope the council reflect on what went wrong with the ballot system.”

Reverend Anthony Rose, who is leading the bid to extend St George’s Church Hall, in Rushbottom Lane, agreed.

He said: “We are pleased to be getting £50,000.

“In light of what happened with the ballot papers, it’s the only fair result.”

Although voting papers were distributed throughout Thund- ersley, a number of residents complained they did not receive one.

As a result, the voting deadline was extended by two weeks, ballot papers were put online for residents to download and a ballot request hotline set-up.

Despite this action, there was still anxiety from community groups the ballot would not accurately reflect residents’ wishes.

County councillor John Jowers, cabinet member with responsibility for communities said: “I hope all residents feel happy with the outcome.

“I do not want the community to lose sight of the fact the cash will ultimately benefit the local area, enabling community groups to change their neighbourhoods for the better.”

The Arts Factory hope to turn a disused council depot at Woodside Park, in Manor Road, Benfleet, into a ecologically friendly workshop offering environmental education, organic gardening and much more besides.

Friends of St George’s church hall hope to extend the building, which is currently used by more than 47 groups a week, such as Guides, Scouts, a parent and toddlers group and a seniors club.
