A GROUP of Chelsea Pensioners was welcomed to Southend to begin a nine-day break.

The old soldiers, dressed in their famous red tunics, travelled from London to enjoy a free holiday at the Grosvenor Hotel, at the invitation of owner Pat Henstock.

Southend West MP David Amess and Southend’s mayor, Brian Smith, were there to welcome the five veterans to the hotel, in Grosvenor Road, Westcliff.

Mr Henstock said: “There are many young heroes in this country, but the old heroes deserve a bit of honour, too. We should help all of them, young and old.”

Activities lined up for the pensioners during their visit include sightseeing trips and dinner at the Naval and Military Club in Royal Terrace.

The town’s own former service personnel are also invited to join the Chelsea Pensioners for a party at the hotel on Good Friday. On Monday, the veterans will be helping staff with a fundraising stall for Armed Forces charity, Help for Heroes, outside the hotel, where any visitors arriving on a motorbike can claim a free tea in return for a donation.
