RESIDENTS are being given greater powers to challenge future planning applications for new strip clubs.

Basildon Council is introducing new legislation allowing people to challenge the number and location of lap dancing clubs in their areas, which will apply from July 1.

The changes will also mean Basildon’s two existing strip clubs – Katz Gentleman’s Club, in Time Square, and Mac’s Bar and Diner, in Paycocke Road – will also have to apply for new sex establishment licences.

Councillor David Abrahall, chairman of the licensing committee, said: “Notice has now been given that we will bring into force the new legislation.

“Not only will this allow local people to have a say over the number and location of sexual entertainment venues in their neighbourhood, but it will also ensure the establishments are operated correctly.”

There will be a 12-month transitional period allowing the existing strip venues, currently regulated under the Licensing Act 2003, to continue to operate.

After this, they will need to get a new Sex Establishment Licence, or face up to £20,000 in fines.

Applications will be advertised and residents will be able to object, if they feel a new strip club would not suit the character of their neighbourhood.

Under the legislation, the council will be able to impose a wide range of conditions on a licence.

The local authority would also have the option of setting a quota on the number of lap dancing clubs it feels is appropriate for a particular area.
