BIKE riders set off on a fundraising mission through south Essex.

Starting outside the Towngate Theatre in Basildon town centre, around 150 people set off on a countryside crusade.

Cyclists of all ages took their pick from two different courses, either a 40-mile ride through the countryside or a more gentle, fun ride through Gloucester Park, Basildon.

Council chairman Mo Larkin started the third annual race, with the fastest riders making the long course in around two hours.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Basildon, proceeds from the day will go to Thundersley-based Little Havens Children’s Hospice and Basildon Hospital’s neo-natal unit. Mike Barrett, chairman of the rotary club’s bike ride committee, said: “It’s been even more successful this year and we’re hoping to beat the £5,000 target we made last year.

“There have been a few spots of rain, but nothing to dampen the spirits of everyone taking part.

“We just thought it would be great to get the people of Basildon involved in something like this.”

Mr Barrett said it would be a few weeks until the club knew the exact fundraising total, but it had already raised around £1,500 in entry fees.
