THE final details of a £6million scheme to cut congestion in Basildon and Castle Point are set to be unveiled.

The A13 Transport Improvement Scheme caused controversy when it was announced, as it proposed chopping down trees in Hadleigh to make way for a bus lane.

But after listening to residents’ concerns, the bus lane idea was scrapped.

This and other changes introduced following the public consultation in 2009 will be on show during an exhibition at Benfleet Methodist Church, on Monday, May 24.

Norman Hume, Essex County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: “The A13 is a key corridor in Essex and contributor to the economy, jobs, housing and more employment in the local area.

“After assessing the results of the public consultation and the cost and benefits of the options, we are now pleased to be able to present the approved scheme to the public.”

Improvements will be introduced between Basildon Bus Station, along Clay Hill Road and the B1464 to Sadlers Farm, then along the A13 to Hadleigh and the Southend borough border. Changes will be made to the layout of the Tarpots junction and bus stops will be improved, with the addition of digital passenger information screens.

Work on the Department of Transport-funded scheme is due to start in July.
