VOLUNTEERS who enjoy gardening are needed to help out at Southend Hospital.

The hospital grounds and flower beds need sprucing up, and a work day has been organised on Saturday, May 22.

The “Dig for Southend” session runs from 8am to 1pm and is part of the Hospital in Bloom scheme, which aims to improve the hospital grounds and existing garden areas for use by patients, staff and visitors.

Voluntary services manager Chris Miller said: “The benefits of a calming, easy-on-the-eye environment in a healthcare setting has been shown time after time to help improve mood. Even as far back as the 1800s, Florence Nightingale was advocating the use of hospital gardens, so it’s nothing new.”

Volunteers must bring their own gardening fork or spade, and meet outside the Lodge at the Prittlewell Chase entrance to the hospital at 8am. Gloves and refreshments will be provided. Call 01702 435555 ext 6135.
