A school celebrated 350 years of the Royal Society with a science competition.

The father of modern science, Galileo Galilei and the biologist Alexander Fleming, who discovered penicillin, provided inspiration for Year 9 youngsters at St Hilda’s School in Westcliff.

Judging the competition, scientist Dr Bob Livingston, a Fellow of The Royal Society, praised all five 14-year-old finalists at the school for their five-minute lectures and PowerPoint presentations on famous scientists and their explanations of an aspect of science that fascinated them.

Winner Jasmine Goodger highlighted the life of Galileo, mathematician, astronomer and philosopher credited with improvements to the telescope.
