A teenager whose aim in life is to serve up top nosh on Royal Navy submarines proudly marched on parade after successfully competing his basic training.

Trainee logistician Joseph Bass, 19, a former pupil of South East Essex College, arrived at the gates of HMS Raleigh, in Cornwall, in February to undergo nine weeks of intensive training designed to transform him from a civilian into a sailor.

The course culminated in the passing-out-parade attended by his family and friends.

Joseph will remain at HMS Raleigh for his professional training within the Defence Maritime Logistics School. During the 26-week defence chef's course he will learn the specialist skills he will require to prepare and cook food to the highest standards at sea or on land.
