CRUEL thugs have shot and killed two ducks in Southend parks.

Police and the RSCPA have condemned those responsible and urged members of the public to come forward with information.

In the first incident, last Thursday evening, a duck, which had a brood of 11 ducklings, was shot with an air rifle in Chalkwell Park, Westcliff. The ducklings were taken in and cared for by the RSPCA.

At 7.35pm on Saturday the police received a call from a concerned member of the public about a duck that had been shot by two boys in Southchurch Park, Southchurch.

Police spokeswoman, Julia Pack, said: “Our inquiries are ongoing.

“Most people will be disgusted by this behaviour. It is shocking to think there are people out there that would harm wildlife for fun.

“We would urge anyone who knows anything about these incidents to come forward.”

Klare Kennett, spokeswoman for the RSPCA, said: “If somebody is going around shooting at ducks they are committing a criminal offence. They could go to prison for six months or face a £20,000 fine.

“It is extremely stupid and cruel to shoot any animal with an air gun, particularly a mother duck who is looking after her young.”

Ms Pack said anyone with information should contact the Southchurch Park neighbourhood policing team or the Chalkwell Park team on 0300 3334444.

Anyone with information about the incidents can also call the RSPCA in confidence on 0300 1234999.
