A MAJOR development of 23 houses and a care home on a derelict site looks set to get the go-ahead.

The site in North Road, Westcliff, has been subject to a number of planning applications.

Now a revised scheme addressing previous concerns about layout, access and overlooking has been submitted to Southend Council and has been recommended for approval by planning officers. The scheme is for 23 houses and a care home up to three-storeys tall with 78 bedrooms with private balconies.

There will also be 50 parking spaces, four motorbike spaces and a cycle store with access from Salisbury Avenue and North Road.

The site is next to the proposed location for a new primary care centre for Westcliff housing GP, district nurse and other health services.

Ian Gilbert, Labour Victoria ward councillor, said he was in favour of the plans as long as there was enough affordable housing and the developer contributed to local services.

He added: “There needs to be due consideration to the impact of parking on the local area.

“I’ve not come across any objections from local residents and North Road does need something doing with it.

“The road as a whole could do with a lift and this will help to provide a few jobs to the area.”

This application was previously agreed by councillors in January 2008, though it was subject to a number of issues which needed to be looked at.

The officers’ report says it considered the latest proposal by applicant Rovestar Estates Limited to address the concerns.
