Basildon Council has been praised for helping local companies by putting more than £4.5million of business their way last year.
The Essex Federation of Small Businesses says the council is putting its money where its mouth is by using businesses on its doorstep.
David Barnes, south Essex branch chairman, said: “During the financial year 2009/2010, the council spent £4,536,049 on goods and services from businesses based within the district. That’s 8.19 per cent of the council’s total expenditure. Across Essex, the council spent £9,647,776.
“We are delighted Basildon has taken the Keep Trade Local slogan to heart and is now spending an impressive £4.5million with businesses in the district. That is money which means a great deal to local firms who, in turn, employ local people.
Basildon Council leader Tony Ball, said: “We are committed to supporting local businesses and have been very proactive in helping our local companies understand how to do business with the council.
“We are keen for local companies in Basildon and Essex to get council contracts.
“Supporting the local economy is vital to the long-term economic prosperity of the town, creating local supply chains, opportunities for local businesses and ultimately, creating jobs for local people.”
