PEOPLE at a care home in Benfleet relived the Fifties during celebrations to mark UK Older People’s Day.

Staff at the Oakdale Residential Home chose the decade as its theme for residents, who often talk about the era they most loved.

A former Royal Navy man also brought in memorabilia for residents to look at, including poster boards, old newspapers, books and photographs.

Home manager Melanie Rickett said: “Some of our residents suffer from dementia, but have strong memories of the Fifties.

“This event helped to bring back so much of their most treasured memories. Events like this always keeps them active.”

The home held a raffle and raised £25 towards the Royal Naval Association, in Southend.

At Thundersley Congregational Church, residents could drop in for advice on the NHS and the Pensions Service.

Information was available for people to find out how to keep active over 50. Mayor David Cross of Castle Point attended both events.
