RAF fighter jets were scrambled to escort a passenger plane into Stansted.
It is understood a disturbance broke out on the Etihad Airways plane, which had been bound for Heathrow airport.
The pilot reported a passenger causing disruption on board and making threats.
Instead the plane, which was en-route from Abu Dhabi, was redirected into the Essex airport.
The fighter jets were scrambled to guide in the plane.
Following the incident a 37-year-old British national was arrested. He remains in custody.
