SOUTHEND Hospital is facing prosecution following the death of a patient who fell from a window.

A report to the hospital’s board of governors by chief executive John Gilham reveals the Health and Safety Executive is investigating the death of the 69-year-old from Brentwood, who fell from the second floor on July 4.

An inquest has yet to be held into the death of the unnamed man but, in his report, Mr Gilham said safety measures had since been put in place for “individuals assessed as at higher risk”.

Changes have been made to various wards, and tamper-proof locks have been fitted to all windows, which still allow ventilation.

Specific side rooms on each of the wards have been designated for vulnerable patients and are fitted with reinforced glass.

Speaking of the “sad incident” in his report, Mr Gilham stated: “Just before Christmas I was notified the executive indicated it is considering prosecuting the trust for breaches of health and safety legislation.

“As a consequence of this, I have appointed Browne Jacobson as the trust’s solicitor to support the trust in any further dialogue with the executive.”

The Health and Safety Executive has confirmed its involvement in the case.

A spokeswoman said: “Our investigation continues but we won’t make any decision until after the inquest later this year.”

The hospital is remaining tight-lipped about the details of the incident.

A spokesperson said: “The incident remains the subject of a full investigation by the trust and the Health and Safety Executive.

“It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”
