A PETITION backing a charity's plans to build a new 16-bed adult hospice on greenbelt land has gathered more than 6,000 names in little over a month.

Havens Hospices wants to build the multi-million-pound hospice on farmland off Belton Way West, Leigh, but has faced opposition from some who feel if the proposal is successful it could open the way for further greenbelt development.

To gather support for the plans, Havens Hospices launched the petition with the hope of gaining around 3,000 signatures, but has smashed this total through paper copies and an online version.

A planning application is expected to be submitted to Southend Council soon, and the online version of the petition will close on Friday.

The charity is asking for paper copies to be returned by the end of the month and they can be posted to New Fair Havens Hospice, FREEPOST CL2119, Westcliff, SS0 8BR or handed in to either Fair Havens Hospice in Chalkwell Avenue, Westcliff, Little Havens Children’s Hospice in Thundersley or any of the charity’s shops.
