AN abandoned dog left for dead at a railway station has been given a new home.

Angela Savage, from Basildon, read about Lola’s plight in the Echo and took in the recovering lhasa apso.

The dog had been tied up and abandoned at Wickford railway station with a shih tzu, named Charlie, earlier this month.

Lola was riddled with maggots, had open sores and suffered from muscle wastage, while Charlie was in an even worse state.

Ms Savage, 40, who works at Basildon Council, said: “Lola’s still a bit scared, but she’s eating and drinking and doing really well.”

The council worker fell in love with Lola when she visited the dog at Acres Way kennel in Thundersley, after reading about how the dog needed a home in Monday’s paper.

After a home visit from staff at the kennels, Ms Savage was able to introduce the recovering pup to her new home on Wednesday.

Ms Savage has owned dogs in the past and her teenage sons were keen to get another one.

She said: “If anyone comes to see her she runs up to them straight away, and is very friendly.

“It’s great to see her doing so well after everything she’s been through.”

Ms Savage is the brains behind the council’s Challenge Angela campaign, which encourages local businesses to contribute to Pitsea leisure centre.

Lola and Charlie, who are aged about five, were initially looked after by Basildon Council’s animal control warden, Sarah Moran, after being rescued by police.

The dogs’ fur was heavily matted, so they had to be shaved,as well as have their infections treated.

Charlie has been given a new home by a police officer.

Anyone with information about the dogs’ abandonment, at 9am on June 13, can call Essex Police on 0300 3334444.
