DRINKERS could face fines of £500 if caught by police causing a nuisance in Basildon town centre.

Basildon Council is looking into allowing police to confiscate alcohol and fine drinkers to clear troublemakers from the town.

St Martin’s Square and the Towngate Theatre are well known as problem spots.

Frank Tomlin, the councillor responsible for community safety, said: “We want to encourage a cafe style culture within the town centre, as we want residents and visitors to enjoy the town.

“If the ban is introduced and enforced, I am confident it will strengthen the arm of the police in reducing the crime and antisocial behaviour that spoils the enjoyment of others.”

The order does not mean a total ban on alcohol, but is intended to clamp down specifically on drunks being a nuisance in a public place.

The law is only broken if someone refuses to comply with a request from a police officer to stop drinking, or surrender alcohol, which can result in a fine or arrest.

Labour councillor Pat Rackley has been lobbying Mr Tomlin on antisocial behaviour in the town centre.

She said: “I am, of course, pleased about the development, but I think something could have been done before this.

“I will not be taking my two-year-old grandaughter into the town square again. The last time I was there with her we were sitting on a bench and we were approached by three drunken yobs.

“This is a step in the right direction. We are trying to promote a better image of Basildon and getting rid of this problem will help.”

The order would cover Basildon town centre and surrounding areas, including Gloucester Park, Kingswood and parts of Lee Chapel North.

Ch Insp Alan Cotgrove, of Essex Police, added: “We are actively patrolling the town centre. We will deal with anyone disturbing members of the public.”
