HUNDREDS of cyclists got on their bikes to raise cash for Leukaemia Research at the 17th annual Southend Bikeathon.

Bikers could do one or two laps of a 13-mile route from Shoebury East Beach to Barling, Great Wakering, and back.

It is hoped the event will raise about £25,000, down from last year’s £40,000.

Heather Hucker, 39, of Bellvue Road, Southend, celebrated her birthday during the ride.

She was in a group of 11 riders called “Seven miles to the pint” meaning they stop for a swift half way along.

She said: “We took part last year and raised £1,500 and hope to get £2,000 this year.

“It is warm, but breezy and a lovely route and great way to see the countryside.”

Organiser Terry Joyce, 58, from Rayleigh, who has been involved with the Bikeathon since 2000, said: “We had about 600 to 700 people take part.

“The course was slightly different this year because we utilised the new cycle lanes Southend Council has put in.

“It makes if different for the people who do it every year and we have had some good feedback from riders.”

Cyclists were helped along the way with two checkpoints offering drinks and snacks at Mucking Hall Farm and Great Wakering.

Groups taking part included Southend County Wheelers cycling club and the Cyclists Touring Club.

Paul Major, 51, of Ulting Way, Wickford, took part with his wife and father-in-law.

He said: “I’ve just got my breath back. We hope to raise a few bob.

“It took us about an hour and was a nice course which wasn’t too hilly. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to raise some money for a good cause.”
